Haoran Zeng 曾皓然  is a writer-director from the People’s Republic of China. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Management (film producing) from the Communication University of Zhejiang in China. He later achieved a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film at Syracuse University in 2024. Thus, he has gained practical industry experience through film production in the United States and China. Furthermore, as he undertook a 35mm film project at FAMU in the Czech Republic during a semester abroad and made a short film there, Father Daughter and Death (2023), he was afforded valuable insights into the European film landscape.

Born and raised in Chengdu, a city far from the political center in mainland China, he has witnessed how the thriving metropolis under the reform and opening policy designed by Deng Xiaoping has wrought sweeping transformation in the field of culture (beginning in 1978 and lasting till now) and in the lives of its inhabitants since his childhood. He thus observed the individual's existential anxiety in the face of the great changes of the period that people simply call “The Times.” This anxiety emerges due to the conflicts between old and new orders, as people grapple with hesitations and self-doubt about their experience when facing imported Western ideologies such as neoliberalism (open market economy and what it led in the socio-cultural field). He depicted this anxiety in his short films, Island In Green (2020) and his thesis film, Crows Gathering Before Winter (2024).
